About Dave Austin

Dave Austin

Dave Austin, who passed away in October 2009 of cancer, began his career in 1975 at the Las Vegas Hilton as an on-call security officer during a number of Elvis Presley's showroom appearances. He was later hired as a fulltime officer and through his drive, determination and hard-working skills, earned the position of Director of Security. This position for Austin, however, did not come easy as he endured encounters with the labor strikes of the 1970s and 1980s as well as the devastating fire in 1981. In 1993, Austin moved to MGM Grand prior to the grand opening as Director of Security. Through a series of quick promotions, he led the Security Department as Vice President for more than 16 years.

Austin was not only a casino executive but touched the lives of countless others outside of work and in the law enforcement community through his passion for life and leadership. He had many interests and hobbies including riding motorcycles, driving sports cars and ATVs, snowmobiling with his family and playing the guitar, among others. Austin graduated with honors from the University of Phoenix and was currently working on his masters prior to his death.
